Breakfast on the Beach
“’Now come and have some breakfast!’ Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread and fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ Peter replied, ‘you know I love you.’ ‘Then feed my lambs,’ Jesus told him.” John 21:12-15 (NLT)
Jesus finds the disciples back at fishing the morning that he offers breakfast on the beach. Perhaps they don’t know what else to do with themselves since the resurrection, and they go back to something very familiar. We can all relate to this. We tend to go back to old ways of coping, relating, or working when our life has been turned upside down. Familiarity is a comfort even if it’s not where we are supposed to be.
I don’t know what Peter or the disciples felt when they met Jesus on the beach that morning, knowing that he knows that they went back to something old after all they had lived with Jesus. I think I would feel guilty. I would feel like coming clean about it.
And that is what this conversation that Peter has with Jesus feels like – coming clean and starting fresh. After a gracious meal, Peter renews his confession of love for Jesus and Jesus reminds him of his true purpose and calling.
Part of living the resurrection is living honestly with Jesus and remembering regularly what he has asked us to do. What do you need to talk to Jesus about today?
