Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” Matthew 8:23-27 NLT
My entire family has taken a vacation together for as long as I can remember. No matter where we go, it always involves time on a boat in the water. The ironic thing is that my mom can’t swim and is deathly afraid of water. A couple of years ago we rented a pontoon boat big enough for our family of 15. The lake felt busy and the water was very choppy. I’m not sure how we survived, but the front of our boat was submerged by a huge wave. We all got drenched and witnessed my mom’s hair wet and messed up for the first time in our lives!
There are many things in life that justify fear – poor health, a rebellious child, losing a job, losing a loved one, a financial crisis, the list of fears could go on and on. When we focus on the problem, it’s easy to lose faith and panic.
The storms in our life can seem overwhelming, but Jesus has the authority over every one of them. Only Jesus can bring calm and overcome fear. Today, may your fear be overcome as you marvel at the One who even the winds and the sea obey.
