Planting and Plucking
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted…” ---Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
Joy! That’s what I saw on the face of my wife, Hilary, when she saw the first buds of her daisy pot starting to sprout through the soil.
Satisfaction! That’s what Hilary saw on my face after I came in from chopping down a small, dead tree on the side of our house that had long been bothering us.
Planting and plucking are common activities for many of us during this time of year. When the weather cooperates, there’s nothing better than spending a couple of hours tending to the yard or plants that we’re responsible for. And it’s all based in the soil that we have been tasked with tending. We enhance the soil by giving it seeds that will produce lush beauty; and we improve the soil by ridding it of the weeds and trash that seek to tarnish it. Both tasks are pivotal for bringing new life in each spring.
Your life in Christ is good soil (Mark 4:20). You have the potential to produce beauty and life in a world that desperately needs some sprucing up. But it may take some planting and plucking to get there.
What can you add or infuse into your daily rhythms this spring to grow the love of Christ in you and those around you? What can you dig out or chop down in your daily rhythms this spring to aerate your spiritual life?
