“And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.”
Luke 1:64 ESV
In the beginning of this chapter, an angel visits Zechariah and explains that his old, barren wife will give birth to a son. I can almost hear Zechariah’s disbelieving laughter as he asks the angel how it could happen and explains why it is impossible. The angel’s response to Zechariah is that he will be unable to speak until the angel’s words come true.
Can you imagine? You’ve been wanting a child your whole life, you know that it is physically impossible, and then an angel shows up and tells you it will happen....and then because of your disbelief you can’t speak!!!
If you’ve ever lost your voice before, you know the frustration of trying to communicate and being unable to. Zechariah was without a voice for 9 months!!! But when he spoke, his first words were to bless God! He used his restored voice to do what he should have done when he first heard the angel’s news!
Since I struggle with my tongue and the words that flow from it, I can admit that if I had been in Zechariah’s position, my first words would not have been to bless God. Far too often I am tempted to use my words to glorify myself or to share my frustration. This week I have been reminded that the first words that flow from my mouth should be ones that praise and glorify the Father! For the Lord is worthy of all blessing, honor, and praise.
This week, will you join me in asking the Lord to give you a better understanding of how you use your words? And will you choose to turn your words from selfish intent to the praise of our Lord?
