You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ Matthew 5:38 NLT
Twenty-three years ago, we purchased our first little two-bedroom home from a sweet widow named Florence Dace. On August 4, 1975, her husband, Tom, was remodeling an apartment building in Springfield, Illinois with his co-worker. One of the tenants of the building, Frank Sherry, had been on a week-long binge of drinking and taking PCP which led to a psychotic state. The hammering and noise made the tenant go crazy and led to the brutal attack and murder of Tom and his partner. Frank’s rampage killed two men and assaulted six others before he was arrested.
Shortly after he was put in prison, Florence Dace was given permission from the Department of Corrections to visit the man who killed her husband. Florence walked in holding a big Bible that belonged to her late husband. She told the man who murdered her husband that she was a believer in Jesus Christ and she came to forgive him and give him her husband’s Bible. The only way she could see anything good coming of this was for him to give his life to Jesus and proclaim the good news!
Frank Sherry served thirteen years in prison before he was released and founded a prison ministry in Arkansas. Frank and Florence went around sharing their testimony of God’s extraordinary grace and forgiveness.
By returning good for evil, we are acknowledging God as the balancer and trust him to be the judge.
Do you trust God?
What wrongs do you need to forgive today?
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32 NLT
