A Good Deal

Date: July 25, 2019

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. --- Romans 8.18

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation.  But take heart; I have overcome the world. --- John 16.33

I like to find good deals.  Leslie and I rarely buy something without ‘looking around’ first.  We make sure we get the best product at the best price.  We don’t like overpaying for something that underdelivers.

As Christ-followers we’re invited to count the cost of faithfulness.  We’re encouraged to consider whether or not we’ve made a wise decision in choosing to follow Jesus.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I’ve gotten a good deal.

Sometimes it seems like the wide path, or the path of least resistance, would be far more enjoyable and beneficial.  Sometimes the cost of following Jesus is high and the immediate rewards are low.

Paul’s encouragement to the Romans and Jesus’ encouragement to the apostles reminds me to take the long view.  Even though the cost is high and the troubles are significant, they aren’t even comparable to the ultimate reward.

As Christ-followers we are also Christ-anticipators.  We await the day He returns.  We pray that His kingdom comes and His is done on earth as it is in heaven.  We look forward to the arrival of the new heavens and new earth.  We are eager to be immortal and glorious.

The sufferings of this present world and the tribulations we endure in Jesus’ name are meager in light of our eternal inheritance.

With the long view, take heart, we got a good deal!
