As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed; he remembers that we are dust.  As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.  But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children – with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.
     Psalm 103:13-18 NIV

Everlasting is an interesting word to use for the way the Lord loves those who put their trust in him.  Some synonyms to the word everlasting are: eternal, never-ending, perpetual, undying, immortal, deathless, indestructible, immutable, abiding, enduring, infinite, boundless, and timeless.  These words paint a picture, don’t they?

And the Psalmist here says, “from everlasting to everlasting” which is like saying the Lord’s love is double infinity… as if eternity could be doubled. It simply is without end for those who are in relationship with him.

We all want to live a legacy and leave something behind, because we know too well, like the Lord does, that we are but dust and our life span seems very short compared to the eternity in our hearts.  So here we find that the Lord’s love overflows throughout generations and through family lines.  And often not ending with family generations but extending to kingdom-building generations of Jesus followers.  Like Psalm 23 shares, “my cup overflows” from God’s goodness, which can be shared with anyone … even enemies … just like Jesus’ love.

So, as you receive the Lord’s compassion and everlasting love today, how will you pass it along?
