Know Them and Love Them
Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12
Our daughter is an introvert – she likes to be alone and is a straight forward, no frills kinda girl. She does not like the same things that I like or spend her time doing the same thing that I enjoy. I have learned that it is harder to love people the way they want to be treated than to just consider how I want to be treated.
To really love someone, you need to know them. It’s not enough to love people the way you want to be treated because that may be different than you. Jesus says in John 10:14-15, “ I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So, I sacrifice my life for the sheep.” Jesus doesn’t just love us – he knows us so he can love us.
It takes a lot more time and understanding to know someone well enough to treat them the way they want to be treated. In the 1990’s, author, Gary Chapman made his book The Five Love Languages popular. We all feel loved in different ways. Love languages describe the way we feel loved and appreciated. Depending on your unique personality, you may experience love differently than someone else.
The five love languages are: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. How do you feel the most loved? Do you know how those closest to you feel your love?
How can you love someone ridiculously today by demonstrating love in a language they will understand?
