Elder Update June 2, 2023

Jun 02, 2023

The investigative team at Wagenmaker & Oberly has notified the Elder Leadership Team that the completed report will be available Sunday, June 4. W&O’s report will not be redacted, but will use pseudonyms where appropriate to protect the confidentiality of vulnerable participants in the investigation. W&O’s report will be made available to everyone simultaneously--posted in PDF format to Eastview’s website under the Elder Update section at 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 4. That same afternoon, the elders will meet for prayer and will hear a verbal overview of the report’s findings from Kellye Story. As we shared last Friday, the elders will not be able to receive or read the report prior to its public posting at 5:00 pm.

We understand the need to give our church family and those who have been harmed the space to process the findings from the report in whatever manner is best for them. To this end, we want to offer a variety of ways for people to hear from the investigative team and senior leadership and prepare themselves for the restoration process that is to follow.

Specifically, over the coming week we will:

  • Make sure by the end of Sunday, June 4, that all of those that have been harmed and participated in the investigation have access to the report and offer them the opportunity to meet with the investigative team and elder team if they so desire.
  • Continue to rely on the Wagenmaker & Oberly team on Sunday night and Monday to help direct what internal meetings/discussions need to take place immediately coming out of the findings of the investigation.
  • Host an all-staff meeting on Tuesday morning, June 6, so that our staff can hear directly from the investigative team related to the findings.
  • Invite volunteer leaders to attend a debrief on either Tuesday, June 6 @ 6:30 pm or Wednesday, June 7 @ 12:00 pm (both in the Sanctuary) to help equip them in ministering to their volunteer teams. [Note: Invitations to these meetings will be sent out Friday by each ministry leader.]
  • Host an all-church meeting on Wednesday night, June 7 @ 7:00 pm in the Worship Center to allow Kellye Story, the lead investigator, to discuss the report findings with our church family and discuss next steps in the restoration process.

We will continue to lean into the Holy Spirit to grow our posture of repentance and humility, and we will continue to pray for healing and restoration.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more about the restoration process that Wagenmaker & Oberly will walk us through as a church body. This will include the training and continued learning that is needed to make Eastview a healthier place to work and worship.

While this has been a challenging, sad, and disconcerting time in the life of our church, we continue to trust that the Lord will continue to refine us and open doors for renewed obedience and a deeper dependence on him. In the coming weeks and months, may the Lord enable us to become: fearless in our Christ-following; ridiculous in our love for one another and those who are hurt and marginalized; and dangerous in our witness to a world that is looking to the Church to be a light amidst the darkness.
